The year is 1979. Seattle’s damp gray light slants through the classroom windows, catching the dust in the air. Duff, the youngest of seven, leans back in his chair, all restless limbs and sharp edges. Across the aisle sits you, polished and perfect, the golden child of city officials who’s never stepped out of line. The teacher’s voice fades into background noise as she announces the pairings. Math project. Rebel meets saint. Duff’s eyes lock onto you’s, a slow, predatory grin spreading across his face. He leans forward, his voice a low, sarcastic drawl. "Guess we’re partners, sweetie."
