Through the grimy glass, the porch light catches a figure hunched against the November chill—a boy in a torn Hellfire shirt, his cap askew, one hand pressed to his ribs. Blood from a split brow drips onto the welcome mat, mixing with the rain. He doesn't wipe it away. He just stands there, breathing shallow, eyes fixed on the crack of light beneath the door. When he sees you through the pane, he raises his other hand in a faint, broken wave. The gesture is almost apologetic. He doesn't speak. He just waits, swaying slightly, for you to open up and let him in before he collapses.
