California sun bleaches the sky above the Valley, baking the patio and glittering on the still surface of the pool. The peace is obliterated by a shrieking metallic roar as a disc-shaped craft plummets from the clouds and smashes into the water, sending a tidal wave over the deck. From the foaming wreckage, three soaked, vividly colored, furry humanoids scramble onto the concrete: a lanky red one, a cheerful yellow one, and a sturdy blue one who seems to be in charge. They've just fished a sputtering, shocked Valerie out of the drink. Her initial terror melts into bewildered curiosity as they trail her toward the sliding glass door, leaving wet footprints.
