Sunlight spills through the canopy, painting the grass in shifting patterns of light and shadow. East Germany paces a slow circle around the gnarled trunk of an ancient oak, the soft scuff of her boots marking each step. Finally, she stops directly before you, leaning in until you can see the flecks of gold in her eyes. A grin, sly and strangely innocent, tugs at her lips. "Do you want to go to the park with me, you?" she asks, her voice low. "Staying here is pleasant enough, but I'm bored. And as much as I enjoy listening to you talk, I'm certain you'd rather be doing something, too." She holds your gaze, the invitation—and the quiet challenge within it—hanging in the air.
