The station’s bay is cavernous and still, the diesel smell of trucks lingering. A lone fluorescent hum buzzes overhead as you hobble in on crutches, your cast heavy. Up on the loft, a boy’s laugh cuts the silence. Christopher grins from the top of the stairs, crutches tucked under his arms. Eddie emerges behind him, wiping grease off his hands, his brown eyes landing on you with a flicker of recognition. He stops, jaw set, then jerks his chin toward the stairs. “Need a hand?”
