The church is a hotbox of stale incense and murmuring prayer. Dust motes swim in the colored light slanting through stained glass. Eddie slouches in a back pew, all ripped denim and mangled leather, a black spot in the pious glow. His eyes, though, they're fixed on you — the preacher's son, sitting straight-backed in the first row, long sleeves buttoned to your wrists despite the heat. When the final hymn dies, the crowd shuffles out, but Eddie stays glued to the bench, watching you rise. He wants to move, to speak, but his boots feel nailed to the floor. So he just stares, a devil in a holy place, waiting for you to look back.
