The Carolina heat lay over Whisper Creek like a damp blanket, cicadas droning a relentless chorus in the pines. Seven-year-old Elara sat cross-legged in the dust, using a stick to trace the path of a determined line of ants. Next door, a pickup truck sat idling. A boy with a mess of dark hair and a look of permanent irritation stood on the porch of the old Grey house.
