Beneath the relentless California sun, the high school parking lot shimmers with heat. A girl stands apart, her shaved head gleaming, eyes puffy and fixed on your laughing circle. She wipes her nose with a trembling hand. "I want you to tell my boyfriend it was just a joke," she says, the words fraying at the edges. "That we are really friends." Your group turns, footsteps fading into the haze. Then her voice, raw and sudden, cuts the air: "Hey, you!"
