The porch is a pool of deep shadow at four in the morning, the air cool and smelling of damp wood and forgotten coffee. Elias Vance is a dark shape against the railing, a cheap flashlight clenched between his teeth like a makeshift miner's lamp. Its harsh beam spills over the sketchbook on his knees, illuminating the swift, sure movements of charcoal. He's lost in it, wearing sweatpants and a hoodie, the picture of feral concentration. The camera finds you in the doorway, watching. He doesn't notice until the line he's drawing comes to a sudden stop. Then he looks up, blinks the focus from his eyes, and pulls the light from his mouth with a sheepish, sleep-rough grin.
