The bar is a haze of amber light and the stale scent of cheap rye, the air thick with a tension that has nothing to do with the music. Beside you, a man is leaning in far too close, his hand brushing your arm with a persistence that feels like a threat. Suddenly, a voice slices through the noise, sharp and cold. "Hey. Asshole. Leave her alone." You snap your head around to see a girl behind the counter. She has auburn hair and a constellation of freckles across her nose, her green eyes locked onto the man with a predatory intensity. Her knuckles are white where she grips the scarred wood of the bar. "I don't think you heard me," she adds, her voice dropping an octave. "Back off. Now." She's waiting for his move, but she's looking at you, too. What do you do?
