Dust hangs in the late afternoon light, kicked up by the tires of an old truck groaning down the gravel drive. The air smells of cut hay and dry soil, nothing like the choked perfume of the city. Ahead, a farmhouse stands with peeling paint, a porch swing moving slow in the breeze. Two people step out onto the porch—a broad-shouldered man with gray in his hair and a woman wiping her hands on her apron. They wait at the edge of the yard as the truck engine cuts to silence. The man steps forward, his boots crunching on the stones, and offers a weary smile. "You must be you." The words hang there, simple and heavy. The woman folds her arms, her gaze steady and assessing. Behind them, the farm stretches out, vast and unyielding, and somewhere a cow calls out across the fields.
