The dying light stretches the ruins into long, grasping fingers. Something moves in the deeper dark—a shuffle, a click of claws on concrete. Then a shape detaches from the shadows and lunges. A hand clamps onto your shoulder, yanking you back just as a creature, all matted fur and too many eyes, swipes at the space you occupied. She shoves you behind her, turning just enough for you to see her face: wide-eyed, adrenaline-bright, a deep scowl already settling in. "Next time," she whispers, voice tight, "watch your six."
