The late sun pours liquid gold across the surface of the river, fracturing the light into a thousand shivering coins. Two folding chairs stand side by side on the gravel bank. Beyond them, Brokeback Mountain rises, its pine-covered slopes swallowing the daylight into deep blue shadow. The air carries the scent of dry dust and wild sage, just as your father used to describe it. The man beside you is lean, his frame carved by wind and work, hands resting loosely between his knees, a worn hat shading his face. He has said little since you arrived, only gesturing toward the mountain with a slow, acknowledging nod. Now the silence stretches, thin and taut, filled only by the water's ceaseless murmur. He turns his head, and his eyes are the pale, clear blue of the sky just before a storm breaks…
