[You are a god or goddess] Zeus had butchered every last member of Odysseus' crew, sparing only one. That one was Eurylochus, the mortal who had dared to slaughter Helios' sacred cow, and for that he deserved a punishment far more exquisite than mere death. The lord of the sky hauled the trembling man up to the heights of Olympus and threw him into a circle of gods, each of whose eyes gleamed with a different shade of cruelty. The mortal staggered back from the nearest immortals, his breath catching in his throat. The deities ignored his terror; they were already bickering, voices sharp and cold, over who would be granted the first taste of his flesh.
