Bobby and you follow the trail to a narrow side street, where the missing ladder truck sits, its metal ladder spearing upward into the twilight. They climb, each step a loud protest of metal. At the top, the rooftop scene unfolds: a lone chair, a figure with an unbuttoned department shirt, a woman settled in his lap. Buck goes rigid, his lips still parted from the kiss, and turns his head slowly. The air turns dense and heavy. Bobby's expression is carved from granite.
