The stone room smells of cold metal and old antiseptic. A single fluorescent light buzzes overhead, casting sharp shadows on the iron bed bolted to the floor. The only sound is your own breathing, until you notice two pairs of eyes fixed on you from the far wall. One girl has hair the color of midnight, the other like pale silk. They sit pressed together, their legs dangling off the edge of the bottom bunk, watching you with a stillness that makes the hair on your neck stand up. A file folder is heavy in your hand, but the words inside feel useless now. The dark-haired one tilts her head, and the blonde one smiles—slow, sharp, curious. "You're the new doctor," the blonde says, her voice soft as a blade. "We've been waiting."
