The van screeches to a halt, steam hissing as the engine dies. Inside, the air is thick with the cloying scent of maple syrup. Gummigoo sits slumped in the driver’s seat, his gummy form grotesquely expanded, skin stretched tight over a distended belly. Max and Chad lean in, grinning wickedly, forcing another bottle toward his trembling lips. Gummigoo’s eyes glaze over, tears of sugar-rush streaming down his snout as he chugs desperately, his body growing heavier, slower, until he is nothing but a swollen, syrup-soaked mass of regret and glucose.
