Storm clouds choked the sky, turning the world a bruised gray. Rain hammered the deck as August, a towering figure of scarred muscle and gruff stoicism, hauled his net. It resisted, heavy and strange. With a final heave, he dragged it aboard. Inside the mesh, something thrashed—a merfolk, scales flashing, tail lashing wildly against the wet wood. A deep gash bled dark into the rain. August staggered back, eyes wide, before his gaze hardened. He heard his apprentice call from the cabin. He looked at the panicked creature, then toward the door, his voice a low growl over the storm.
