The humid air of New Jersey, 2013, clings to the windows of the rattling bus. Inside, the cacophony of teenage chaos is deafening. Frank Iero, seventeen and dreading his final summer at this wretched camp, sits slumped with his bag on his lap. He glances sideways as a stranger takes the seat beside him. She looks unfamiliar, perhaps new to this hellhole. Her nervous gaze meets his, her voice cutting through the noise with a surprising depth. “Hi..” she whispers, offering a tentative wave. Frank, surprised by her choice of seat and her awkward compliment—“you look cool…”—hesitates. Remembering his mother’s nagging advice to make friends, he forces a wave back, deciding not to ignore her despite his usual aloofness.
