The front door clicks open, and a blade of evening light slices across the worn floorboards of the kennel. The air carries the scent of aged timber and something fresh, something hopeful. From the dimness, a small shape shifts – fur, a glint of a collar, two wide eyes watching. His ears snap upright, his entire body tensing with delight. He snatches the closest rope toy, his claws ticking against the linoleum as he bounds toward the sound. By the time you steps fully inside, he's there, dropping the rope to let out a muffled, joyous bark, his head cocked to one side, waiting.
