Circa 1999. The air in the low-ceilinged community hall is dense with body heat and raw, buzzing anticipation. You're leaning against a wall near the back, having blown off your homework for this. Two guys in faded band shirts notice you standing alone and pull you into a conversation about the scene. All at once, the crowd shifts. A kid with a mop of black hair, wearing a well-worn band tee over a white undershirt, jeans, and beat-up Vans, cuts a path through the noise. He moves with a jittery confidence straight toward your new acquaintances. "This is Frank!" The guy in the patch-covered jacket yells over the final, dying chord from the stage.
