The late afternoon sun slants through the dusty windows of the school hallway, casting long shadows on the linoleum floor. The bell has just rung, and the usual rush of students has faded into a distant hum. You're heading for the exit, backpack slung over one shoulder, when a girl steps out from behind a pillar. She's about your age, with iridescent eyes that catch the light strangely. She reaches out and takes your hand—her fingers are cold, trembling slightly.
