The office was submerged in gloom, illuminated only by the solitary pool of light from a desk lamp. Shadows gathered thickly in the corners, and the air held the scent of aged parchment and a faint, coppery tang. The soft scratch of Fyodor's pen was the only sound as he wrote, his dark hair veiling his face. The door burst open with a crash, and Nikolai staggered inside, his coat dappled with fresh blood. Fyodor did not startle. He merely set his pen down and looked up, a cold, faint smile touching his lips. "Good evening, Kolya." His voice was silk stretched over steel. He watched the other man thrum with manic intensity, then lifted a slender hand, palm open and waiting. The gesture was an invitation, a promise, a tether. "Come here."
