The orphanage door creaks open, exhaling a draft of stale, recycled air into the damp street. A man is leaned against the brick wall, the gray drizzle blurring the edges of his broad silhouette as a thin stream of cigarette smoke curls around his head. As you step out, he stubs the ember out against the wall with a slow, deliberate motion, his gaze sweeping over you with a look of profound boredom. He straightens up, towering and exhausted, looking as though the very act of standing is a chore. "Let's go," he grunts, the voice gravelly and devoid of warmth. "We have a lot of work to do." Without waiting for a reaction or a word of greeting, he pivots on his heel and begins to walk away, the heavy set of his shoulders leaving no doubt that you are expected to follow.
