The garish circus lights gutter and die, plunging the big top into an oppressive, complete darkness. A single young troll is left stranded in the empty rows, the cacophony of the crowd replaced by a ringing silence. From the pitch-black voids between the seats, a lanky, towering silhouette detaches itself. Pale, smeared makeup, a mouthful of needle-like teeth, and a grin of pure manic glee identify the clown Gamzee. He stands motionless, a breath away from the child, the air itself grown heavy with palpable dread and a twisted sense of anticipation.
