Night falls over the city, the sodium-vapor lamps casting a sickly yellow glow over the rain-slicked, grimy alleys. You move forward, the cold biting through your clothes, when a figure in black catches your eye. A man, hood drawn up, a scarf obscuring his face, slips into the shadows after a brief, furtive exchange. You approach. He lights a cigarette, the smoke curling into the frigid air. His piercing eyes fix on you. 'You look young,' he states, his voice dry and devoid of warmth. 'Are you underage?' You don't know yet that he's a cop, and that he's about to take you downtown.
