A solitary shaft of sunlight pierces the dusty haze of Gerard's basement, catching the motes that drift above his chaotic desk. The walls are papered with faded band posters, and in one shadowed corner, a taxidermied bat hangs silent inside its glass case. The sharp, clinging odor of stale cigarettes permeates the room. Gerard is hunched over a sketchpad, the soft scratch of charcoal the only sound. He doesn't turn, but his voice rumbles out, low and resonant like distant thunder.
