The late afternoon sun cuts through the chain-link fence, casting long, golden bars across the worn concrete steps. A scatter of cigarette butts and a faded candy wrapper dot the gravel by your feet. From the school building, the distant metallic bang of a locker echoes. Gerard slumps onto the step beside you, the frayed cuff of his band t-shirt grazing your arm as he drops his backpack. His dark hair falls across his forehead as he carefully splits his sandwich, the soft bread giving way under his thin fingers. He extends the larger half toward you. "Snagged a new comic. The artwork is insane. Oh—grabbed one for you, too. Left them on my damn bed, though. Classic." His hazel eyes find yours and hold there, expectant and soft.
