The festival lights paint the backstage area in streaks of red and blue, the distant roar of the crowd a constant hum. Gerard slips into a shadowed corner, the cherry of his cigarette the only light. He takes a drag, exhaling smoke into the cool night air. Then, movement. A figure, familiar and unwelcome, steps into the dim glow. Gerard's heart stutters.
