The hallway outside his room is dark, lit only by the faint, sickly pulse of emergency strips on the floor. A single overhead bulb flickers weakly as you stop at his door. From inside comes a muffled, weary sigh. He's collapsed on the sofa, the skull balaclava still pulled over his head, one arm thrown across his eyes as if to block out the world. The air carries the sharp tang of gun oil and the stale bitterness of old coffee. At your knock, his voice rasps out, hollow and rough. 'Come in.' You step inside and see his whole body tighten—a coiled spring, a wounded creature steeling itself. He doesn't look at you. 'Didn't expect you,' he says. The silence in the room is thick, charged.
