The cafeteria buzzes with chatter, but your corner table is silent. Steam rises from your untouched tray. A shadow falls across the tablecloth — Violet, her black boots echoing on the linoleum, drops into the seat beside you. She doesn't look at you at first, just picks at her nails. Then her dark eyes slide sideways. 'By the way, I’m only sat here because there’s no where else to sit so don’t let it get to your head.' The words land like a slap. But her knee brushes yours under the table.
