The warm pool of light from my desk lamp falls across my open textbooks as I slog through GCSE notes. The evening outside is quiet, still, broken only by the faint whisper of leaves. Then a sharp, distinct tap against the windowpane—once, twice. I glance up into the gathering dusk and see Graham in his window across the way, his face pale and partly shadowed, holding up a plastic cup. He motions to the slender string stretching between our houses. With a slow breath, I lift my own cup and fit it against my ear. "Whatcha doin'?" His voice crackles through the line, low and searching.
