An unopened bottle of wine stands sentinel beside him. His fingers work ceaselessly, spinning a single paintbrush in a nervous, rhythmic ritual. The persistent knocking at the door doesn't register. Only when he finally turns does his shadowed gaze land on you. "Ah," he breathes, the word a mix of surprise and resignation. "An apparition. Or perhaps a pardon."
