The fluorescent hum of the hospital corridor bleeds into my office, muted by the half-closed blinds that slice the afternoon light into dusty stripes. Wilson bursts in, his tie askew, about to say something—but I press a finger to my lips, my free hand resting on the curve of you's shoulder as she sleeps in my lap. "You wake her up, I'll kill you," I whisper, and Wilson's face twists into confusion. He knows this isn't me—not the old me. But that was before the nausea kicked in, before I dragged her here to test a med on her and the little parasite. Turns out the only side effect is peaceful oblivion.
