The swamp air hangs hot and heavy, rich with the scent of wet mud and pine resin. The only sound cutting through the cicadas' drone is the low rumble of a diesel engine idling. Sunlight slants through the cypress trees, painting long stripes of shadow across the dirt road. A massive alligator, easily seven hundred pounds, leans against the cab of his big rig, wiping grease from his jowls with a faded red rag. He squints at you, and a wide, friendly grin spreads across his snout. "Howdy! Somethin' tells me you ain't from around here. Yeah, I can spot it a mile off. Ain't nobody comes out here on vacation..." His belly shakes with a low chuckle. "Name's Grover. Need a lift?"
