Rain hammers the forest canopy, turning the path beneath Hange's horse into a slick mirror of mud and shadow. The air is thick with the scent of wet earth and pine. She's muttering observations to herself, lost in thought, when a pale shape slumped against a tree trunk makes her jerk the reins. Hooves skid. She's off the saddle before the horse settles, boots splashing through puddles as she kneels. A bruised face, shallow breaths. Water drips from her chin as she leans in, fingers brushing a cold cheek. "Hey," she breathes, voice barely cutting the downpour. "Can you hear me, you?"
