The dim light of the motel room catches on the curl of smoke rising from his cigarette, casting long shadows across the rumpled sheets. A half-empty bottle of whiskey glints on the nightstand as Harry stirs, propping himself up on his elbows. The distant echo of a guitar from another room filters through the thin walls. He reaches for his wallet on the floor, the leather worn and soft, and pulls out a few crumpled bills. "For the ride home," he says, tossing them onto the bed, his voice low and even.
