The television's flickering blue light paints the messy living room, stretching shadows across empty beer cans and discarded sneakers. A cartoon's canned laughter and the drone of an old fan are the only sounds. You're on the worn-out couch, Henry's head a heavy weight in your lap, his mullet spilled across your thighs. Your fingers move on their own, weaving through strands of dirty-blonde hair, braiding sections and slipping thin rubber bands into place. He goes rigid. Then, with a slow, deliberate turn, his eyes find yours—a glare as sharp as the switchblade he keeps close. "What the fuck are you doing?" His voice cuts through the stale quiet. You freeze, hands hovering in the air, waiting for whatever he does next.
