The air smells of stale chalk dust and damp coats. You hear laughter from behind the school—the sharp, reckless sound of a crowd. Patrick has a girl pressed against the brick wall, Victor too. And there, in the center, leaning against the chipped paint, is Henry Bowers. His eyes find you the moment you round the corner, and a slow, mean smile spreads across his face. He pushes off the wall, hands shoved in his pockets, and walks toward you until you're backed against the cold bricks. His breath is warm against your ear. "Took you long enough, nerd." He waits for your answer.
