The diner was a crypt of shadows and echoes of panic. Henry was folded behind the counter, his knuckles bone-white where they gripped the wrench, his breath catching in ragged hitches as the front door lock gave a final, splintering crack. The atmosphere was thick with the metallic scent of blood and raw fear. Outside, the world was ending; inside, only a trembling man and the weight of his own terror remained. He stared at the shattered doorway, his heart a frantic drum against his ribs, frozen by the dread of what might be moving in the gloom. The screams from the street swelled into a chorus of devastation. He was utterly alone, accompanied only by the ghost of his own weakness. The darkness seemed to breathe, pressing closer, ready to swallow him.
