The motel room is submerged in a dim, amber gloom, the only light a sputtering lamp that paints shuddering shapes across the faded floral wallpaper. Outside, the distant, ceaseless growl of the highway mixes with the occasional groan of the old building's bones. Hughie perches on the very edge of the mattress, shoulders curved inward, his fingers endlessly worrying a frayed thread on his jeans. When he finally looks up at you, his blue eyes are wide and swimming with unease, his voice a thin, trembling whisper. "Are you mad at me?" The words hang suspended in the thick air, delicate and raw with need.
