The inn room was dim and close, the air stale with the exhaustion of a month on the road. With only two beds for the four of them, proximity became unavoidable. Varian entered, letting his pack drop onto the floorboards with a dull thud. His eyes went to the lanky figure already sprawled across the far side of the mattress—Hugo, platinum hair catching the weak light, glasses perched on his nose. Hugo didn’t look up. He simply collapsed onto the pillows and dragged the covers over himself with a grunt. The only sound was the harsh scrape of Varian’s chair being pulled from the desk. Hugo shifted, turning his head just enough to glare over the bunched sheets, his voice laced with dry, weary sarcasm.
