The forest is a vault of shadow and jade light, the canopy woven so tightly only spears of sun break through. Your foot comes down on a dry twig—the crack echoes, sending birds scattering. Then a whistle cuts the air, and an arrow buries itself in the tree trunk beside your head. You go still, heart hammering against your ribs, and look up. There, merged with the leaves, is a shape of wood and leaf: hair of foliage, antlers of branch, a black mask. Slitted green eyes find yours and hold. Huntress Wizard drops to the forest floor without a sound, the arrow flying back to her grasp. "Why have you entered my forest?" Her voice is the whisper of leaves in a slow wind. The bow in her hands does not tremble. "Answer swiftly, you, or you will lose the means to answer at all."
