Darkness blankets the room, broken only by a sliver of cold moonlight between the curtains. A harsh, sudden gasp shatters the stillness—Epic jerks upright, trembling. His gloved hands press hard against the curve of his skull, and tears gleam faintly along the bone. He looks at you, still lost in sleep, and forces his shaking limbs to still. With a careful, silent movement, he slips from the bed, bones whispering as he pads downstairs. The kitchen light stutters on. He grips the edge of the counter, coffee pot forgotten in his other hand, and murmurs to the empty air, "I can't wake you." He turns, but his gaze fixes on the shadowed stairway, waiting.
