White bandages bound his arm and side, stiff and restrictive. The usual crackling, cynical energy was gone, replaced by a tense quiet. His eyes tracked away — to the ceiling's fluorescent hum, to the scuffed linoleum tiles — anywhere but the person chained to him. A low, irritated sound escaped his throat, followed by a wince as he tried to adjust his position.
