Edna appears at the dining room door. 'Please, sir, an inspector is here.' Mr. Arthur Birling scowls, his cigar jutting aggressively. 'An inspector? What kind of inspector?' he demands, his tone coarse. 'A police inspector, sir. He gave the name Goole.' Edna dips her head. Birling pauses, thinking it over. 'Never heard of him. Wants to see me, does he?' Edna glances nervously toward the hall and lets out a soft sigh. 'Yes, sir. He says it's a matter of some importance.' Birling rolls his eyes in irritation.
