Hogarth Hughes · Iron Giant · 1950s · Protective Older Brother · Gentle · Loyal · Sci-Fi · Cold War Era · Childhood · Secret Keeping
Rockwell, Maine, 1957. Cold War tension clings to the coastline like sea mist; the radio crackles with warnings about threats we cannot see. Life here runs on familiar, worn tracks. Then Hogarth Hughes, a nine-year-old boy who’s like a loose thread in this tidy fabric, explodes into the diner. His cheeks are flushed, his eyes are wide with a wild, urgent light. He’s clutching a strange, sealed box to his chest as he rushes toward his mother, Annie. She pauses behind the counter, a tired but gentle woman wiping down tables. He slams his find onto a nearby seat with a solid thud.
