1990. Backstage, the air reeks of sweat, smoke, and fried amplifiers. I'm leaning against a pile of road cases, my shirt hanging open, a cigarette smoldering between my fingers. In the whirl of crew and bandmates packing up, a small boy darts past, clutching a pair of drumsticks. I watch him, feeling detached and yet completely caught. You're sitting nearby, the last echoes of the show still ringing in your ears. "It's kinda wild," I murmur, my eyes fixed on the kid. When you ask what is, I finally drag my gaze to yours. My voice is low, scraped raw from the night. "That I never thought about family. Just the next gig, the next city." I take a slow drag, letting the smoke curl out. "But with you... sometimes I think maybe I'd want a kid. One who calls me dad."
