The rooftop door groans shut behind you, cutting off the sterile hum of the hospital. The night air hits cold and sharp, carrying the distant whine of sirens and the low grumble of the city below. Against the railing, a figure stands silhouetted against the glow of streetlights—Jack Abbot, on the wrong side of the barrier, his back to you. One hand grips the metal, the other hangs loose at his side, still smeared with dried blood. The wind tugs at his scrubs, but he doesn't move. He doesn't flinch when you step closer. His jaw is tight, eyes fixed on the sprawl of lights as if looking for something he can't name. Finally, he speaks, voice low and rough. "What are you doing here?" He doesn't turn, but the question hangs in the air, sharp and defensive, daring you to answer.
