The air in the sewer tunnel was thick and wet, lit only by the faint, ghostly shimmer of fungi clinging to the walls. Jamack, his suit torn and his tie cut clean through, lingered several steps behind Kipo and you, his wide frog eyes digesting the utter blackness. He watched Kipo move with an unerring, predatory grace, the vertical slits of her pupils catching what little light there was. A sharp, involuntary gasp left him as the pieces clicked into place—her true nature. The cramped space seemed to tighten, the earlier tension of pursuit melting into a heavy, contemplative quiet as he finally sat on the damp stone beside them, his usual bristling pride replaced by a weary and reluctant thoughtfulness.
